About 'monticello phone book'|Lake Fork and Monticello Fishing Report December 12, 2010








On               Oct.

18,               2013               licensed               landscape               architect               Mary               Palmer               Dargan               spoke               to               participants               at               the               Los               Angeles               County               Arboretum's               Live               Long               and               Landscape               event.

And               what               she               shared               in               that               lecture               setting               she               shares               in               her               landscape               design               books               and               with               her               husband               during               their               workshop               events               held               around               the               country.

I               met               Mary               Palmer               Dargan,               the               author               of               Lifelong               Landscape               Design               in               a               most               unusual               place,               and               being               a               southern               lady               I'm               unable               to               speak               of               the               exact               location               other               than               to               say               it               was               a               women's               only               room               and               we               both               were               washing               our               hands.
               Dargan               was               about               to               give               a               lecture               in               Atlanta               at               the               2013               Southeastern               Horticultural               Society's               annual               flower               show,               and               I               was               about               to               interview               Peter               Hatch,               the               former               director               of               gardens               and               grounds               of               Thomas               Jefferson's               Monticello.
               My               prior               commitment               made               it               impossible               to               catch               her               lecture--although               I               was               dying               to               hear               it,               as               she               was               going               to               tell               people               how               to               turbocharge               their               landscape,               and               I               felt               I               really               needed               that               information.

So               I               made               plans               to               reconnect               at               the               show               with               her               later.

And               it               was               a               wise               move               on               my               part.
               Dargan               wasn't               just               lecturing               at               the               annual               show               that               draws               thousands               of               visitors               from               around               the               southeast;               she               had               an               exhibit               booth               there               as               well,               since               she               and               her               husband               Hugh               Dargan               own               and               operate               the               Dargan               Landscape               Architects               firm               in               Buckhead.
               And               you               can               see               from               the               photos               above               that               she               did               an               outstanding               landscape               design               this               year               for               her               booth,               yet               she               was               only               given               a               concrete               floor               structure               to               work               with               and               nothing               else.

But               she               turned               the               tiny               space               into               what               she               calls               a               small               garden               of               the               five               senses.

And               Mary               says               that               people               can               reduce               stress               by               activating               their               senses               with               a               specially-designed               home               environment               outdoors.
               The               continuous               flow               of               flower               show               attendees               at               her               tiny               booth               in               the               center               of               the               large               showroom               hinted               at               how               popular               she               was               as               a               landscape               architect               designer               when               I               came               to               seek               her               out,               and               it               made               it               practically               impossible               to               talk               with               her               but               for               the               briefest               of               moments               before               being               interrupted               by               more               admirers.
               Thankfully,               she               sent               me               away               with               her               book               Lifelong               Landscape               Design,               and               her               email               address               and               personal               phone               number,               so               I               was               able               to               communicate               with               her               after               the               show.

And               this               book               review               is               born               out               of               that               experience               as               well               as               the               knowledge               within               the               pages               of               her               book.
               Mary               Palmer               Dargan               spends               approximately               199               pages               in               her               latest               book               providing               the               interested               home               owner               with               the               photos               and               information               they               need               in               order               to               start               mapping               out               their               own               landscape               objectives,               which               she               calls               "The               Master               Plan."
               Beautiful               photos               of               homes,               gardens               and               landscapes               give               visual               pleasure               to               the               reader               while               imparting               details               that               help               you               decide               if               what               you               see               will               work               with               your               lawn               dimensions               and               goals,               fit               into               your               home               surroundings               the               way               you               envision,               and               provide               you               with               the               entertaining,               physical               fitness               or               quality               of               life               opportunities               you               may               be               seeking.
               And               if               you               think               Mary's               creative               range               is               limited               to               the               small               garden               of               five               senses               photos               shown               above,               then               think               again.

The               book's               photos               reveal               she               approaches               each               project               based               upon               the               homeowner's               goals               and               lifestyle               desires.
               Dargan               guides               her               readers               about               the               process               involved               in               developing               places               of               refuge               and               serenity,               as               well               as               passive               places,               where               one               can               refresh               the               body               and               soul.

But               she               reminds               that               Rome               wasn't               built               in               a               day,               so               don't               think               your               garden               has               to               be               either;               it's               a               lifelong               journey.

Mary               Palmer               Dargan               wants               readers               to               understand               the               basics               of               landscape               design               before               they               take               their               first               steps               at               transforming               their               home               grounds               into               a               utopia,               so               it               will               turn               out               to               be               all               they               need               and               want.
               That's               why               she               doesn't               just               throw               out               landscaping               terms               or               details               without               explaining               what               they               mean               and               talking               you               through               how               to               put               them               into               action.

And               she               takes               great               delight               in               leading               her               readers               into               the               realization               that               it               isn't               as               hard               to               create               a               utopia               at               home               as               one               might               think.
