On Oct. 18, 2013 licensed landscape architect Mary Palmer Dargan spoke to participants at the Los Angeles County Arboretum's Live Long and Landscape event. And what she shared in that lecture setting she shares in her landscape design books and with her husband during their workshop events held around the country. I met Mary Palmer Dargan, the author of Lifelong Landscape Design in a most unusual place, and being a southern lady I'm unable to speak of the exact location other than to say it was a women's only room and we both were washing our hands. Dargan was about to give a lecture in Atlanta at the 2013 Southeastern Horticultural Society's annual flower show, and I was about to interview Peter Hatch, the former director of gardens and grounds of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. My prior commitment made it impossible to catch her lecture--although I was dying to hear it, as she was going to tell people how to turbocharge their landscape, and I felt I really needed that information. So I made plans to reconnect at the show with her later. And it was a wise move on my part. Dargan wasn't just lecturing at the annual show that draws thousands of visitors from around the southeast; she had an exhibit booth there as well, since she and her husband Hugh Dargan own and operate the Dargan Landscape Architects firm in Buckhead. And you can see from the photos above that she did an outstanding landscape design this year for her booth, yet she was only given a concrete floor structure to work with and nothing else. But she turned the tiny space into what she calls a small garden of the five senses. And Mary says that people can reduce stress by activating their senses with a specially-designed home environment outdoors. The continuous flow of flower show attendees at her tiny booth in the center of the large showroom hinted at how popular she was as a landscape architect designer when I came to seek her out, and it made it practically impossible to talk with her but for the briefest of moments before being interrupted by more admirers. Thankfully, she sent me away with her book Lifelong Landscape Design, and her email address and personal phone number, so I was able to communicate with her after the show. And this book review is born out of that experience as well as the knowledge within the pages of her book. Mary Palmer Dargan spends approximately 199 pages in her latest book providing the interested home owner with the photos and information they need in order to start mapping out their own landscape objectives, which she calls "The Master Plan." Beautiful photos of homes, gardens and landscapes give visual pleasure to the reader while imparting details that help you decide if what you see will work with your lawn dimensions and goals, fit into your home surroundings the way you envision, and provide you with the entertaining, physical fitness or quality of life opportunities you may be seeking. And if you think Mary's creative range is limited to the small garden of five senses photos shown above, then think again. The book's photos reveal she approaches each project based upon the homeowner's goals and lifestyle desires. Dargan guides her readers about the process involved in developing places of refuge and serenity, as well as passive places, where one can refresh the body and soul. But she reminds that Rome wasn't built in a day, so don't think your garden has to be either; it's a lifelong journey. But if you are looking for a one-stop shopping place for the tools to create that dream landscape then her book is it. She gives patterns for--and outlines the six tenets of--sustainable living, such as how to restore the balance of nature in your home environment, rather than destroying it through design. She also outlines lifelong landscaping principals you need to know, and explains the four parts of any landscape. Mary Palmer Dargan wants readers to understand the basics of landscape design before they take their first steps at transforming their home grounds into a utopia, so it will turn out to be all they need and want. That's why she doesn't just throw out landscaping terms or details without explaining what they mean and talking you through how to put them into action. And she takes great delight in leading her readers into the realization that it isn't as hard to create a utopia at home as one might think. And who doesn't need a haven from the stresses of the day? And if that were not enough, Mary Palmer Dargan takes her readers into some of the most breathtaking and glamorous grounds found at homes and estates around the country, even sharing parts of Highcote as well, her home at High Hampton in Cashiers, N.C. And she's so generous with her knowledge she's even created a free Vimeo video showcasing some of the photos and information found in her new book. What author does that? Dargan's Lifelong Landscape Design follows her previous bestseller, Timeless Landscape Design: The Four-Part Master Plan. But it also builds upon the information provided in that book, helping Dargan's new fans catch up with the ones who've been following her work for years. And now both groups can purchase her latest addition at Amazon.com or Barnes & Nobel for approximately $22.50 plus tax and shipping and handling based on April 2013 pricing. The Kindle version is about half that price. |
