One of the nicest campgrounds I have visited in the state of Virginia is the Christopher Run Campground. The campground is located at 7149 Zachary Taylor Hwy, Mineral, VA 23117 on Route# 522 and is within easy driving distance of Washington, DC and Northern Virginia, and very convenient to Richmond, Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, and Culpepper, VA. This campground has campsites and facilities for trailers and recreational vehicles (RV's). What is really great is that you can often have a private tie-up for your boat that is within walking distance of many of the campsites near the water. During our stays at the campground, we were able to tie up our pontoon boat within feet of the two campsites we were using with a 5th wheel travel trailer and a hard side popup camper. It also gave us the option to sit on the boat and relax at the end of the day while watching the many birds and waterfowl including blue herons. I always love hearing the fish jumping out of the water and the big splashes when they fell back in. The camp store offers many food and drink items, including giving you the ability to purchase fishing licenses for both in state or out of state visitors. You can also pay the fees to launch private boats and there are plenty of parking spaces for your trailer. They also sell bait, fishing equipment and supplies, and a wide variety of souvenirs. The staff has always been friendly and willing to help us find something or solve a problem. You can enjoy planned activities for the whole family including karaoke, movies, bingo, potluck dinners, hayrides, and dances are scheduled each camping season. They host the Christopher Run Blue Grass Festival every year that lasts all weekend long and draws hundreds of music lovers and well-known bluegrass bands. With 200 sites, including cabins that sleep up to six persons and deluxe cabins that sleep up to eight, there is plenty of room for camping, having a fire, and congregating with friends. You can also rent a 28-foot RV with a rear bedroom and the table and sofa also make into beds. The campsites are large and wooded with water and electrical hookups and a dumping station is nearby. If you have no interest in "roughing it", there is also a lodge with many more amenities, though you do have to bring some things with you. Some of the other campground amenities include tables, church services, complete hookups, public phone, clean flush toilets, winter storage, hot showers (always welcomed), a laundromat, propane, a playground for children, ice, arcade room, large air conditioned pavilion, mail service, and a recreation hall. Current campsite rates begin at $28.00 for basic campsites with no hook up and sites with water and electric start at $31.00. Sites with water, electric, and sewer are $33.00. Regular cabins start at $45.00 and $65.00 a night for the deluxe cabin. There are special restrictions for holiday weekends and some of their special events along with minimum stays. Because rates can and do change, it is always a good idea to call ahead and check on them and on what amenities are available with each different camping option. Discount rates are available for AAA and Senior Citizens. The campground is next to Lake Anna, a 13,600-acre body of water that offers almost any type of boating or water sport from power boating, sailing, skiing, jet skiing, and swimming. There is over 200 miles of shoreline and many places where you can tie up to have a picnic. Fishing has always been a great time for my family and some of the bass are the largest we have ever caught. I also enjoy riding down to the North Anna Nuclear Power Station, which also offers tours of the facility through the Virginia Power Visitors Center. This campground not only offers campsites and facilities for RV's, it also boasts a small marina with private tie-ups for your boat. The marina itself offers 50 wet slips with gas on the water. Fish in Lake Anna range from bass, striped, and large-mouth bass, walleye, crappie, bluegills, sunfish, and many other species of fish and you can fish from your boat or from the campground fishing pier. The campground has six boat ramps and provides parking for your boat trailer, even if you are not a camper at the campground. If you do not have your own boat, you can rent canoes, v-hulls boats, pedal boats, and jet skis. You should be able to find something that fits the favorite water sport of each member of your family. If you would like to spend a day (or two or three) traveling around the local area, there are dozens of great attractions. There are several golf courses such as Tanyard Golf Course, Meadows Farm Golf Course, and Shenandoah Crossings Golf Course. Winery tours are nearby as are several Civil War Battlefields. Historical places are within driving distance and include Montpelier, Monticello, and the James Madison Museum. For a day of family fun, visit King's Dominion Amusement Park and, best of all, it's only one hour away near Richmond, VA. Other interesting places include the Michie Tavern, dozens of specialty shops, stores, and more museums. Of course, a drive through the Shenandoah National Park is always a favorite attraction. So, the next time you are thinking of a getaway weekend, think about visiting this friendly campground. With reasonable rates and lots of planned and unplanned fun, it could be one of the best weekends you have ever spent away from home. Pets are welcome with some restrictions (they are not allowed in the cabins), but you must have them leashed and pick up after them.
